The word “caboose” is supposedly derived from the Dutch word “kombuis,” which was the term used to describe a ship's galley. The caboose played a key role in railroad operations for over a century. The origins of the caboose appear to date back to the 1840s.Inside a caboose, the conductor kept records and handled business from a table or desk. On long routes, cabooses included sleeping accommodations and cooking facilities. The cupola, often found on cabooses, was designed to sit atop the train car to serve as a lookout center for crew members.
