Built in 1865 by Captain William Parker Halliday, a prominent Cairo businessman and riverboat captain, this French Second Empire-style mansion was once the jewel of 'Millionaire's Row'. The 11-room brick home reflects the prosperity and strategic importance Cairo held as a major river port in the 19th century.Captain Halliday, who resided at Riverlore until his death in 1899, incorporated nautical features into the mansion's design, a nod to his life on the water. Later, the Rendleman family, who acquired the mansion nearly a year after Halliday's death, further enhanced the property. Mrs. Rendleman developed the landscaped grounds, selecting flowers, shrubs, and trees, including the now-famous 100-year-old Gingko tree. Their daughter, Adelaide, inspired by a third-floor theater, pursued a stage career.While plans to transform Riverlore into a museum of Mississippi River history never materialized, the mansion remains a significant architectural landmark.
