Discover more about Neermahal

Neermahal, also known as Twijilikma Nuyung, stands as a testament to the grandeur of Tripura's royal past. Built by Maharaja Bir Bikram Kishore Manikya Bahadur in 1930 and completed in 1938, this 'Water Palace' is unique in Eastern India and the largest of its kind in the country. Located 53 kilometers from Agartala, the palace sits in the middle of Rudrasagar Lake and is a beautiful fusion of Hindu and Mughal architectural styles. Envisioned as a summer residence, Neermahal provided a cool retreat for the Maharaja and his family. The British company Martin and Burns were commissioned to construct the palace in 1921, and it took nine years to complete. The palace is divided into two main sections: the Andar Mahal on the west side, which served as the private living quarters for the royal family, and the open-air theatre on the east, where cultural events like dance, drama, and music were held. The palace boasts 24 rooms and intricate designs, with sandstone and marble used extensively in its construction. Balconies, pillars, ornate walls, and pavilions add to its architectural splendor. The dome-shaped minarets give Neermahal a fort-like appearance. Two stairways lead down to the lake, where the Maharajas would board hand-powered boats from 'Rajghat'. Today, visitors can enjoy boat rides around the lake, observe migratory birds, and witness the palace's reflection shimmering on the water. The palace hosts an annual water festival in August, featuring cultural programs and water sports.
