Discover more about Tomb of Akbar

Located in Sikandra, a suburb of Agra, the Tomb of Akbar is the mausoleum of the third Mughal emperor, Akbar the Great. The tomb's construction began around 1605, commissioned by Akbar himself, and was completed in 1613 by his son, Jahangir. The structure is primarily built from deep red sandstone, with white marble features. The tomb is set within a 119-acre complex with a vast, well-maintained Charbagh garden, divided into four sections by waterways, offering a peaceful escape from the city. The tomb complex has four gateways, with the southern gate serving as the main entrance, reminiscent of the Buland Darwaza at Fatehpur Sikri. The architecture is a blend of Hindu Rajputana and Islamic styles. The five-story structure incorporates geometric, floral, and calligraphic designs. Unlike other Mughal tombs, Akbar's Tomb faces east towards the rising sun. The actual tomb of Akbar is located in the basement, which is not generally open to the public. During the reign of Aurangzeb, the Jats ransacked the tomb, looting valuables and even burning Akbar's bones. In 1905, Lord Curzon directed extensive restoration work. The tomb remains an important architectural masterpiece of the Mughal era, reflecting Akbar's sophisticated taste and his reign marked by peace, prosperity, and cultural progress.
