The Tomb of Mariam-uz-Zamani is a significant historical site in Sikandra, a suburb of Agra. This mausoleum commemorates Mariam-uz-Zamani, also known as Jodha Bai, the favored Rajput wife of Emperor Akbar. She was not only Akbar's wife but also a trusted advisor, symbolizing Mughal-Rajput harmony. Originally, the structure was an open pleasure pavilion (baradari) constructed in 1495 AD by Sikander Lodi. Jahangir, Mariam-uz-Zamani's son, transformed it into a tomb between 1623 and 1627. The tomb's architecture showcases a blend of Hindu and Islamic styles, reflecting Mariam-uz-Zamani's Rajput heritage and her influential role in the Mughal court. The red sandstone building is adorned with intricate carvings, detailed calligraphy, and geometric patterns. The four facades of the tomb are constructed with red sandstone panels. Octagonal towers (chhatris) grace each of the four corners, enhancing the aesthetic appeal. Inside, the tomb features a central chamber housing the cenotaph of Mariam-uz-Zamani. The original cenotaph lies on the ground floor, with two similar stones placed on the middle and terrace levels. The walls of the forty chambers on the ground floor display faint traces of paintings. Besides Mariam-uz-Zamani, her granddaughter Bahar Banu Begum is also buried in the same mausoleum. Visiting the tomb offers a glimpse into the life and times of a remarkable woman and the architectural grandeur of the Mughal era.
