Amar Singh Gate, the southern gateway to Agra Fort, welcomes visitors to this UNESCO World Heritage Site. Constructed between 1565 and 1573, it was initially called Akbar Darwaza, named after Emperor Akbar. During Shah Jahan's rule, it was renamed to honor Amar Singh Rathore, a Rajput prince of Marwar known for his bravery.The gate's architecture reflects the Mughal emphasis on security and grandeur. Its massive red sandstone walls and double gateway design controlled access to the fort, providing a strong defensive barrier. The gate shares architectural features with the Delhi Gate, including a drawbridge, diversions at the entrance, and a high ramp. Two octagonal towers flank the gate, and the Naubat Khana, surrounded by pillared pavilions, stands as an imposing structure.Legend says that Amar Singh Rathore killed Salabat Khan, Shah Jahan's chief treasurer, before leaping over the fort walls on his horse. Though the horse died, Amar Singh's courage impressed the emperor, leading to the gate's renaming. The gate provides access to the fort's palaces, audience halls, and other structures.
