Discover more about Diwan-e-khas

The Diwan-e-Khas, located within the Agra Fort, stands as a testament to the refined aesthetics and strategic importance of the Mughal Empire. Constructed in 1635 by Emperor Shah Jahan, this hall served as a space where the emperor engaged with important guests, conducted private meetings, and addressed critical state affairs. The hall's architecture reflects a blend of Persian and Indian styles. The rectangular structure features a flat wooden ceiling, once adorned with gold and silver leaves that mimicked the sun's rays. The hall is open on three sides, accessible through five arched openings supported by double columns. Piers are inlaid with floral designs, with the upper portions painted and gilded. The four corners of the roof are topped with pillared chhatris. Originally, the hall was more opulent, featuring a silver and gold inlaid ceiling, which was later stripped. Notably, the Diwan-e-Khas once housed the Peacock Throne before it was moved to Delhi. An inscription within the interior hall, dating back to 1636-37, likens the room to the highest heaven and the emperor to the sun. The hall's design facilitated the Mughal emperor's ability to conduct private audiences and address affairs of state with the utmost sophistication. Today, the Diwan-e-Khas stands as a reminder of the Mughal Empire's grandeur and artistic achievements.
