Kanch Mahal: A Mughal Jewel in Agra

Kanch Mahal, situated near Akbar's Tomb in Sikandra, Agra, is a captivating architectural marvel from the Mughal era. Constructed in the early 17th century, likely between 1605 and 1619, this monument served as a royal ladies' resort (mahal) and a hunting lodge (shikargah) for Emperor Jahangir. Shah Jahan commissioned the Kanch Mahal as a peaceful sanctuary for royal women.The palace exemplifies Mughal domestic architectural style, featuring a square shape surrounded by a garden with water channels and tanks. The two-story structure is made of brick masonry with finely carved red sandstone. The name 'Kanch Mahal,' meaning 'Glass Palace,' comes from the intricate glass mosaics that once adorned its walls, creating a dazzling play of light and color.The building's design includes interconnected pavilions, courtyards, and a symmetrical layout typical of Mughal aesthetics.
