The Veechar Utensils Museum, also known as Vishalla Environmental Centre for Heritage of Art, Architecture and Research, is a unique museum established on April 27, 1981, by Surendra C. Patel with the support of Jyotindra Jain. Located opposite Vasna Tol Naka, within the premises of the Vishalla Village Restaurant in Ahmedabad, Gujarat, it offers a captivating journey into the history of Indian culinary traditions. The museum's collection features over 4,500 traditional Indian utensils and kitchen accessories crafted from various materials like copper, brass, iron, and terracotta. These utensils, collected from different parts of India, some even from Samarkand and Uzbekistan, showcase the ingenuity and craftsmanship of artisans from centuries past. The exhibits include pots, pitchers, betel boxes, nutcrackers, ritual accessories, incense burners, and lamps. The museum also displays a collection of locks, nutcrackers, and religious objects. The museum is set in a quadrangle-shaped hut made of mud, bamboo, dung, and straw, creating a rustic ambiance that complements the exhibits. At the center of the museum, there is a small temple dedicated to Lord Shiva. The open-air setting aims to preserve examples of fast-disappearing domestic vessels and the techniques used to make them. Visitors can explore the museum's two main galleries: one dedicated to metal utensils and the other to nutcrackers. The metal utensils section displays equipment made of wood, stainless steel, copper, mud, glass, brass, bronze, zinc, and German silver. The nutcracker section exhibits sculptures of different sizes and shapes, crafted from materials ranging from mud to silver. The Veechar Utensils Museum is not just a display of old objects; it is an effort to document, conserve, and educate visitors about the cultural significance and craftsmanship of these items. It provides a glimpse into how people lived in the past and how their needs have changed over time.
