Discover more about Jama Masjid

Jama Masjid, also known as Jumah Mosque or Jami' Masjid, stands as a testament to Ahmedabad's rich history and architectural diversity. Constructed in 1424 by Ahmad Shah I, the founder of Ahmedabad, it was one of the largest mosques in the Indian subcontinent at the time. The mosque was intended as a principal place of worship for the Sultan and the Muslim community. The mosque's design showcases a unique blend of Islamic, Hindu, and Jain architectural styles. Built with yellow sandstone, the complex features a large rectangular courtyard measuring 75 meters long and 66 meters wide. The courtyard is surrounded by colonnades adorned with Arabic calligraphy. A large ablution tank sits in the center of the courtyard. The prayer hall on the west side features 260 columns supporting 15 domes, creating a mesmerizing play of light and shadows. Some of the domes have lotus-like carvings, reflecting Jain and Hindu influences. The Qibla wall, facing west, is decorated with colored marble. Interestingly, some materials used in the mosque's construction were sourced from demolished Hindu and Jain temples, further contributing to its unique architectural fusion. The mosque has faced challenges over the centuries, including the collapse of its minarets during an earthquake in 1819. Despite this, the Jama Masjid remains a cherished landmark and a must-visit destination in Ahmedabad.
