Sarkhej Roza, often called the 'Acropolis of Ahmedabad' due to its resemblance to the Acropolis of Athens, is a captivating historical complex in Makarba, near Ahmedabad. Built in the early Islamic architectural style of the region, it showcases a fusion of Persian, Hindu, and Jain influences.The complex is centered around a large tank (pond) constructed in the mid-15th century. The Roza was established as a retreat for Shaikh Ahmed Khattu Ganj Baksh, a Sufi saint and advisor to Sultan Ahmed Shah. After the saint's death in 1445, a mausoleum and mosque were built in his honor, completed in 1451. Subsequent rulers, including Sultan Mahmud Begada, expanded the complex with pavilions, a private mosque, and palaces.The architecture features intricate jali screens, detailed stone carvings, and sprawling arcades. The main mausoleum of Saint Sheikh Ganj Baksh Khatu is supported by thirteen pillars. The mosque, encircled by corridors, connects to the prayer hall and includes a balcony facing the tank. The complex also houses the tombs of King Mahmud Begada and his family.Today, Sarkhej Roza stands as a testament to Gujarat's architectural heritage, attracting visitors with its tranquil ambiance and rich history.
