Discover more about Sarkhej Roza

Sarkhej Roza, situated in Makarba, a village 7 km southwest of Ahmedabad, Gujarat, is a captivating architectural complex that reflects the region's rich cultural and historical tapestry. This site is not just a monument but a confluence of social, royal, and spiritual elements, making it a must-see destination for those exploring Ahmedabad. The complex is celebrated for its Indo-Saracenic architecture, a style that beautifully merges Islamic influences from Persia with indigenous Hindu and Jain features. This fusion is evident in the elegant pillars, intricate stone latticework (jalis), and the overall design, which served as a precursor to the Mughal architectural period. The architecture of the complex is credited to Azam and Muazzam Khan, two Persian brothers. At the heart of Sarkhej Roza lies the mausoleum of Shaikh Ahmed Khattu Ganj Baksh, a Sufi saint and advisor to Sultan Ahmed Shah, the founder of Ahmedabad. The saint's association with the site dates back to the early 15th century when he retired to the tranquil village of Sarkhej. Following his death, a tomb and mosque were constructed in his honor, completed in 1451. Subsequent rulers, including Sultan Mahmud Begada, expanded the complex by adding a central tank, pavilions, and a private mosque. The complex also includes the tombs of Mahmud Begada and his queen, Rajabai, known for their impressive filigreed screens. The large water tank, now often dry, was constructed by Sultan Mahmud Begada in the mid-15th century and is surrounded by palaces and pavilions that once served as summer retreats for the royal family. Today, Sarkhej Roza stands as a testament to Gujarat's rich cultural and architectural heritage, attracting visitors from all walks of life. The site is managed by the Archaeological Survey of India (ASI) and the Sarkhej Roza Committee and remains a significant spiritual and historical landmark.
