Explore Ahmedabad's oldest mosque, a serene blend of Indo-Islamic architecture and historical significance dating back to 1414.

4.7

Shahi Jam-e-Masjid Bhadra stands as a testament to Ahmedabad's rich Islamic heritage and architectural brilliance. Constructed in 1414 by Sultan Ahmed Shah I, the founder of Ahmedabad, it is the oldest mosque in the city. The mosque was built as a private place of worship for the royal family. The mosque's design showcases early 15th-century Indo-Islamic architecture, blending Islamic elements with local Gujarati styles. The main prayer hall features five arched gateways, with a ceiling supported by stone pillars, beams, and arches. The structure incorporates 152 intricately carved pillars, some repurposed from Hindu and Jain temples, reflecting the cultural amalgamation of the era. The mosque also features ten large domes surrounded by smaller domes. Inside, the mosque offers a tranquil atmosphere with cool marble floors. The prayer halls are adorned with black and white marbles, and a separate chamber exists for women. An inscription above the main arch in the prayer hall indicates its completion in 1414 AD. The mosque also includes a water Hauz (tank) in the large courtyard for ablutions. Today, the Shahi Jam-e-Masjid Bhadra remains an active mosque and a popular attraction for those interested in history, architecture, and religion.
