Sela Lake: A Himalayan Paradise

Sela Lake, often called Paradise Lake, is a mesmerizing jewel nestled in the Eastern Himalayas, close to the Sela Pass in Arunachal Pradesh. Perched at an elevation of approximately 13,700 feet (4,170 meters), this high-altitude lake is renowned for its serene beauty and spiritual significance. The lake's crystal-clear waters mirror the surrounding snow-capped mountains and verdant landscapes, creating a picturesque setting that captivates visitors. The area is considered sacred by local communities and Buddhist monks, adding a layer of cultural depth to its natural appeal. Sela Lake is one of 101 sacred lakes in the region, each holding its own spiritual story. Throughout the year, Sela Lake presents different faces. During winter (December to February), it transforms into a snowy wonderland, with the lake often freezing over. In summer (March to June), the melting snow reveals lush greenery, making it ideal for sightseeing. The lake gives rise to a narrow stream that eventually joins the Tawang Chu river at Nuranang Falls. The lake is named after Sela, a Monpa woman who, according to local legend, played a role in the 1962 Sino-Indian War. The pass and lake serve as a crucial transit point and hold a special place in the hearts of the Monpa people.
