Discover more about Dr. Salim Ali Bird Sanctuary

Located in the heart of Aurangabad, Maharashtra, the Dr. Salim Ali Bird Sanctuary, also known as Salim Ali Talab, is a haven for birdwatchers and nature enthusiasts. Named after the eminent Indian ornithologist Dr. Salim Ali, the sanctuary provides a tranquil environment coupled with the melodious chirping of birds, offering a peaceful retreat from the bustling city life. Originally known as Khizri Talab during the Mughal era, the lake and surrounding area have a rich history. During the reign of Aurangzeb, a significant portion of the marshy land was reclaimed, and the remaining area was transformed into the lake we see today. The site was officially revamped and developed into a public and recreational space in 2014. The sanctuary is a biodiversity hotspot, hosting various species of trees, shrubs, aquatic plants, insects, fish, reptiles, and of course, a wide variety of birds. Bird species commonly spotted here include cormorants, egrets, herons, storks, ducks, and geese. During the winter season, migratory birds such as flamingos, pelicans, and cranes also visit the lake. Visitors can enjoy leisurely strolls along designated pathways that wind through diverse habitats, including wetlands and gardens. A 60-foot watchtower offers a panoramic view of the lake and the surrounding landscape, providing an excellent vantage point for birdwatching and photography. Boating facilities are available when the lake is full, typically during the rainy and winter seasons.
