The Regional Museum of Natural History in Bhubaneswar, established in 2004 by the Ministry of Environment and Forests, Government of India, is dedicated to raising awareness about the environment and promoting conservation education. The museum's exhibits showcase the rich biodiversity of Odisha, the northeastern region of India, the Andaman and Nicobar Islands, and even parts of Madagascar and Africa. Visitors can explore a variety of galleries, including the biodiversity gallery, which highlights the unique ecosystems of the region, and a section dedicated to the lesser-known biodiversity of the Northeast. Other interesting displays include the African Gallery, an Insect Corner, a library, and a Discovery Center. One of the museum's most prominent attractions is the enormous skeleton of a Baleen Whale, believed to be the largest of its kind in India. The museum also houses skeletons of a Toothed Whale, rhinoceros and elephants in addition to the skulls of different animal species, including that of tigers, rhinos, whales, elephants, etc. The museum plays an active role in the community by providing extracurricular activities for schools and promoting environmental awareness. It also offers tactile exhibits for visually challenged students. In May 2017, the museum became one of the first in India to generate and utilize green energy through a rooftop solar power system.
