Discover more about Patna Museum

Patna Museum, a repository of Bihar's cultural and historical evolution, was founded in 1917 to preserve artifacts discovered in and around Patna. The idea for the museum arose in 1912, following the separation of Bihar from Bengal. Initially housed in a commissioner's bungalow and later in the Patna High Court, the museum moved to its current building on Budh Marg in 1929. The building itself, designed by Rai Bahadur Vishnuswaroop, is a striking example of Indo-Saracenic architecture, combining Mughal and Rajput elements. Inside, visitors can explore a vast collection of archaeological objects, coins, art, paintings, textiles, and sculptures. Highlights include artifacts from the Mauryan and Gupta periods, Buddhist sculptures, and terracotta figures. The museum also boasts a significant collection related to Rajendra Prasad, the first President of India. One of the museum's most prized possessions was the Didarganj Yakshi statue, a polished sandstone figure from the 3rd century, though it has since been moved to the Bihar Museum. Other notable items include the Relic Casket of Buddha, said to contain the ashes of Gautama Buddha, and a 200-million-year-old fossil tree. In 2015, with the opening of the Bihar Museum, a decision was made to transfer artifacts dating up to 1764 to the new museum, while the Patna Museum retained items from the post-1764 period. The Patna Museum continues to offer visitors a glimpse into the region's past, with exhibits such as the National History Gallery, the Dr. Rajendra Prasad Gallery, and the Geological Gallery.
