Well organised tour of the Golden Triangle with a trip to Varanasi on the Ganges

We chose the “Golden Triangle with Varanasi tour” run by Amazing India Tours and booked through Tour Radar, because we were looking for an organised tour of the Golden Triangle and thought an additional excursion to Varanasi would be interesting. And, indeed it was, perhaps even our favourite part of the trip. This was our first time in India and we are not in our 20s, so we were looking for a tour which covered all the bases and this the tour did 100%. Communication with the company before and during the tour was excellent. The drivers, company representatives and tour guides were totally reliable. They turned up on time (early in all cases in fact) and got us sorted out seamlessly. We gave them tips (slightly more generously than suggested by the tour company but we were pleased with the overall service). This is not to say that everyone was perfect. The tour company seems to subcontract out the work to local guides (we had five separate guides) and they varied in quality to some degree. The standard of drivers was high and our driver for the Golden Triangle section of our tour really looked after us well. We chose the level of our accommodation and although each hotel/guest house was good, the accommodations tended to be located in non-central locations and there was little opportunity to wander out to a local restaurant. So we tended to eat dinner in the hotel restaurant. This means that a half-board rather than bed-and-breakfast arrangement would work better. Reviews for each of the hotels have been given separately. One of the evening meals that was included in the tour was a cooking lesson at an Indian family’s house. Great fun and wonderful food - the generous tip we left was well deserved. One point that several people mention in reviews of these types of tours is that the guides include stops at local factories/shops that provide some educational background to local crafts and the opportunity to purchase goods. Apparently the guides get a percentage of sales and it is not clear whether the prices and even the quality of the merchandise are good. The guides are apparently also encouraged by the local authorities who understandably want to market local wares. We experienced these visits too and by the end of the tour we were quite resistant to sales talk (my wife was always much better than I was), and, besides, we were travelling light so could not buy much anyway. The tour company makes clear than you are not under any obligation to buy, but actually, I think it would be much better if these visits were totally optional. Overall, Amazing India Tours did a very good job arranging our tour and we had a very enjoyable and interesting time. This was our first time in India and the tour gave a real insight into the amazing architectural, cultural, historical and religious heritage of the most populous country on Earth.
