Discover more about Anna Memorial park

Anna Memorial, officially named Perarignar Anna Memorial, stands as a tribute to C.N. Annadurai (affectionately known as Anna), a former Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu, India. Located on the northern end of Marina Beach, one of Chennai's most iconic locations, it marks the site of his cremation in 1969. Anna was a pivotal figure in Tamil Nadu's political landscape and an influential leader in the Dravidian movement, which championed social justice, linguistic pride, and regional identity. The memorial complex features a black marble platform, an eternal flame, and a sword pillar topped with a spherical light. The site provides a tranquil environment for visitors to reflect on Anna's life and legacy. A museum on the northern side of the memorial houses exhibits detailing Annadurai's life, literary works, and his role in the Dravidian movement. The memorial also serves as the final resting place of his protégé, M. Karunanidhi. The memorial has undergone renovations over the years. During the DMK party's reign (1996-1998), it was remodeled with an entrance arch featuring the 'Rising Sun,' the party symbol. However, this design was removed when the AIADMK party regained power. The memorial suffered damage during the 2004 Indian Ocean tsunami but was subsequently repaired. Adjacent to the Anna Memorial are memorials dedicated to other prominent Tamil Nadu leaders, M.G. Ramachandran (M.G.R.) and J. Jayalalithaa (Amma). These adjacent memorials create a larger complex honoring the region's political history. Visiting Anna Memorial offers insights into Tamil Nadu's political heritage and provides a serene escape on the bustling Marina Beach.
