Chennai Snake Park: A Reptilian Realm in the City

Chennai Snake Park, officially the Chennai Snake Park Trust, is a not-for-profit NGO established in 1972 and stands as India's first reptile park. Founded by herpetologist Romulus Whitaker, the park is located next to the Children's Park in the Guindy National Park campus. It is home to a wide array of reptiles, including various species of snakes like adders, pythons, vipers, and cobras, as well as crocodiles, lizards, and turtles. The park's primary goal is to educate the public about snakes and other reptiles, fostering awareness and dispelling common fears that often lead to their unnecessary killing. The park spans one acre and attracts over five lakhs of visitors annually. The Chennai Snake Park also engages in breeding programs for endangered pythons and conducts medical research projects, including developing snake repellent for army personnel. Visitors can observe venom extraction demonstrations and learn about snake behavior, venom, and safety measures. The park features glass-fronted enclosures for snakes and open-air enclosures for crocodiles and larger lizards. Dioramas and preserved specimens further enhance the educational experience. The park is recognized as a medium zoo by the Central Zoo Authority.
