This sacred site is built over the tomb of St. Thomas, one of the twelve apostles of Jesus Christ, who arrived in India in AD 52 and was martyred here in AD 72. The basilica is one of only three churches worldwide built atop the tomb of an apostle, the others being St. Peter's Basilica in Rome and Santiago de Compostela Cathedral in Spain.
The basilica's history is rich and layered. The Portuguese arrived in Mylapore around 1500 AD and constructed a church over St. Thomas's tomb in 1523. Over time, this structure fell into disrepair, and the British reconstructed it in 1896 in the Neo-Gothic style. The towering white facade and intricate architecture reflect this period, with a 183-foot-high spire that captures the eye.
Inside, the basilica features a nave that stretches 112 feet by 33 feet, adorned with inspiring chandeliers and stained-glass windows that depict the life of St. Thomas and other apostles. The main altar showcases a statue of Jesus Christ, and wooden plaques illustrate scenes from Christ's final days.
