Shri Ashtalakshmi Temple: A Coastal Abode of Divine Wealth
A vibrant temple dedicated to the eight forms of Lakshmi, offering a unique spiritual experience on the shores of Chennai's Besant Nagar Beach.
The Shri Ashtalakshmi Temple, completed in 1976, is a prominent landmark on Chennai's Besant Nagar Beach, dedicated to the eight forms of Goddess Lakshmi. The temple was built with the blessings of Sri Chandrashekarendra Saraswati Swamigal of Kanchi Mutt and inspired by the Ashta Lakshmi shrine in the Varadharaja Perumal Temple at Kanchipuram. The temple's design reflects a blend of ancient Dravidian and contemporary architectural styles, resembling the shape of 'AUM,' the sacred Vedic mantra. This unique structure, modeled after the Ashtanga Vimana, features a multi-tiered complex with the sanctums arranged so devotees can visit each shrine without stepping over others. Inside, you'll find the eight forms of Lakshmi, each representing a different aspect of wealth and well-being: offspring, success, prosperity, knowledge, courage, bravery, food, and knowledge. The main shrine, located on the second level, houses Lakshmi and her consort Vishnu, both facing the Bay of Bengal. The temple also includes shrines for Santhanalakshmi, Vijayalakshmi, Vidyalakshmi, Gajalakshmi, and Dhanalakshmi, each with unique iconography and significance. As you explore the temple, the sound of the ocean waves blends with the spiritual atmosphere, creating a serene and uplifting experience. The temple is open from 6:30 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. and 4:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m., providing ample opportunity for devotees and tourists to visit.
