Hariyali Devi Temple: A Himalayan Abode of the Green Goddess

The Hariyali Devi Temple, located near Syund in the Rudraprayag district of Uttarakhand, is a sacred site dedicated to Goddess Hariyali Devi, an incarnation of Goddess Durga. Perched at an altitude of 1,400 meters (4,600 feet), the temple is surrounded by verdant forests and offers breathtaking views of the Himalayan peaks. The name 'Hariyali' signifies 'greenery', perfectly reflecting the lush landscape that cradles this divine abode. According to Hindu mythology, the temple marks the spot where a hand of Mahamaya fell. When Kansa attempted to kill the seventh child of Devaki, Mahamaya, her body shattered into pieces that scattered across the earth. The hand landed at Hariyali Kantha, making it a revered Siddha Peeth, one of 58 such sites. The temple houses idols of Hariyali Devi astride a lion, along with Kshatrapal and Heet Devi. Hariyali Devi is also worshipped as Bala Devi and Vaishno Devi. Every year, thousands of devotees visit the temple, especially during Janmashtami and Diwali. During these festivals, the idol of the Goddess is carried in a procession to Hariyali Kantha, about 7 km away. The temple is open from 6 AM to 7 PM, providing ample time for visitors to seek blessings and experience the serene atmosphere.
