Nestled within the Institute of Forest Genetics and Tree Breeding (IFGTB) campus in Coimbatore, the Botanical Gardens offer a refreshing retreat into the natural world. Established in January 1971, the gardens serve as a living laboratory and a center for ex-situ conservation. The garden was founded by Dr. K. N. Subramanian, a Research Officer in the erstwhile Botany Branch, Forest Research Centre, Coimbatore. Recognized by the Botanical Garden Conservation International, the gardens contribute to education, aesthetics, and scientific understanding. Spanning 3.4 hectares (8.4 acres), the gardens showcase a diverse collection of plant species, including over 110 species of trees, 90 species of medicinal plants, and various ornamental plants. Different sections are dedicated to specific plant groups like fruit-yielding trees, bamboo, cacti, and succulents. A greenhouse houses orchids and ferns. Visitors can explore labeled plants, providing both common and scientific names, enhancing their botanical knowledge. The gardens also play host to flower shows, attracting tourists with vibrant displays. The IFGTB specializes in tree improvement of major tree species and Forest Genetic Resources Management, besides conducting forestry extension activities and training. While smaller than the TNAU Botanical Garden, the IFGTB Botanical Gardens offer a peaceful and educational experience, ideal for nature enthusiasts and those seeking a quiet escape within the city.
