Coimbatore Palace, also known as Uthukuli Aranmanai Palace, stands as a testament to the rich history of the Kongu region and the Kalingarayar dynasty. This ancient clan ruled parts of western Tamil Nadu from the times of the Cholas. The palace, located roughly 56 kilometers from Coimbatore International Airport, is not just a historical site but also a treasure trove of Tamil architecture and heritage. The Kalingarayars were known for their valor and dedication to the people. They dedicated a canal to the people of western Tamil Nadu around 1282 by creating a union between the rivers Amaravathi, Bhavani, and Noyyal, tributaries of the Cauvery River. This canal is known as the Kalingarayar canal. The ruler of Vijayanagar bestowed the title 'Rayar' on them in recognition of their services. The palace itself was constructed in four phases, each reflecting a distinct architectural style. The earliest phase shows influence from Kerala architecture, with low and slanted roofs designed to handle the region's heavy rainfall. This section of the palace once housed a large granary.Today, the palace is being restored by members of the Kalingarayar family, preserving its legacy for future generations. Historians and visitors alike can admire the craftsmanship of the past and appreciate the efforts to protect this slice of Tamil Nadu's heritage. While it may not be among the most prominent tourist destinations in Coimbatore, its historical significance and architectural beauty make it a worthwhile visit for those interested in delving deeper into the region's past.
