Noyyal River Point: A Resilient Waterway

Noyyal River Point offers a glimpse into the journey of the Noyyal River, a vital yet challenged water body in Tamil Nadu. The river originates in the Vellingiri Hills of the Western Ghats, near the Kerala border, and travels approximately 180 kilometers through Coimbatore and Tirupur before merging into the Kaveri River. Historically known as Kanchimanadi, the Noyyal River has been a sacred element in Tamil history. The Chalukya Chola kings developed an intricate system of canals and tanks connected to the river, facilitating water storage, transport, and groundwater level maintenance. This system prevented flooding and supported agriculture, making the region prosperous. However, rapid industrialization and urbanization have taken a toll on the Noyyal River. Textile industries in Tirupur are major contributors to pollution, discharging dyes, heavy metals, and other harmful chemicals into the river. Domestic waste also adds to the river's contamination as it flows through urban areas. Despite these challenges, there are ongoing efforts to restore the Noyyal River. Organizations like Siruthuli are actively involved in conserving and rejuvenating the river's resources. The Coimbatore City Municipal Corporation (CCMC) is also planning to set up sewage treatment plants along the river's course to prevent the inflow of wastewater.
