Tiger Cave, located in Saluvankuppam near Mahabalipuram, Tamil Nadu, is an intriguing rock-cut Hindu temple complex dating back to the 7th-8th century. Carved during the Pallava dynasty, under King Narasimhavarman I, the site gets its name from the crown of carved tiger heads that adorn the entrance of the cave. However, some believe the carvings depict the mythological Yali, leading to it also being called Yali Mandapam.Historically, Tiger Cave is believed to have served as an open-air theater or a gathering place for cultural events, evidenced by its large, open forecourt. The site consists of a rock-cut pavilion and the cave temple of Atiranchandesvaram. The main temple features a black Shiva Linga, with carvings of guardians around the sanctum. The site also contains ruins of a temple dedicated to Lord Subramanya, discovered in 2005. A carving of Goddess Durga attacking the demon Mahishasura can also be seen.Today, maintained by the Archaeological Survey of India (ASI), Tiger Cave attracts history buffs, cultural enthusiasts, and those seeking a serene escape. The natural landscape, with boulders and greenery, enhances its aesthetic appeal.
