HMI Museum: A Mountaineering Legacy
Explore mountaineering history at the Himalayan Mountaineering Institute Museum in Darjeeling.
The Himalayan Mountaineering Institute (HMI) Museum, established in 1957, stands as a tribute to the spirit of mountaineering and adventure. Founded by Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru in 1954 to commemorate the first successful ascent of Mount Everest by Tenzing Norgay and Sir Edmund Hillary, the HMI has become a pilgrimage site for climbers and adventure enthusiasts from around the globe. The museum itself is a treasure trove of mountaineering history, showcasing a diverse collection of artifacts related to Himalayan expeditions. Visitors can explore exhibits featuring mountaineering equipment, photographs, manuscripts, and personal belongings of famous mountaineers. The museum also highlights the flora, fauna, art, and culture of the Himalayan region. A key attraction is the section dedicated to the first ascent of Mount Everest in 1953, displaying equipment used during the historic expedition. Beyond the exhibits, the HMI Museum offers a glimpse into the training and education provided at the institute. The museum also serves as a center for research and education on mountaineering activities. Sharing grounds with the Padmaja Naidu Himalayan Zoological Park, visitors can enjoy stunning views of the Kanchenjunga range.
