Gauri Shankar Temple: A Spiritual Oasis in Old Delhi

Discover spiritual serenity at the ancient Gauri Shankar Temple in Chandni Chowk, a haven of peace dedicated to Lord Shiva and Goddess Parvati.

4.6

Located in the heart of Chandni Chowk, the Gauri Shankar Temple is one of Delhi's oldest and most significant Shiva temples. Believed to have been built around 800 years ago, the temple provides a tranquil retreat from the energetic atmosphere of Old Delhi. Legend says that a Maratha soldier and Lord Shiva devotee, Apa Ganga Dhar, built the temple after miraculously recovering from severe battle injuries. The temple's main attraction is an 800-year-old brown lingam, encased in a marble representation of a female organ and encircled by silver snakes, symbolizing the cosmic pillar. Behind the lingam, you'll find the idols of Lord Shiva and Parvati (Gauri-Shankar), beautifully adorned with real gold jewelry under a silver canopy. The temple also houses idols of their sons, Ganesha and Kartik. A unique feature is the marble chair of Bhagat Swaroup Bramachari, a Hindu saint who spent over 50 years at the temple; his portrait, sandals, and teachings are preserved here. The temple's architecture reflects traditional Hindu design. The atmosphere is filled with the soft chanting of 'Om Namah Shivaya' and the scent of incense, creating a peaceful environment for meditation and prayer. The temple is open to all, regardless of caste or creed, offering a spiritual experience for everyone.
