Hauz-i-Shamsi: A Medieval Reservoir

Hauz-i-Shamsi, meaning "sunny water tank," is a water reservoir constructed in 1230 AD by Sultan Shams-ud-din Iltutmish, of Delhi's Slave Dynasty. The reservoir's construction was inspired by a dream in which the Prophet Muhammad instructed Iltutmish to build a reservoir at a specific location. According to the legend, the Prophet's horse struck its hoof at that location, causing water to gush forth. Originally, the Hauz-i-Shamsi covered a much larger area and served as a crucial source of water for the inhabitants of Mehrauli. Over time, the reservoir has witnessed the rise and fall of dynasties, and although reduced in size due to encroachment and siltation, it remains a significant historical site. A domed pavilion, constructed by Iltutmish to mark the hoof print of Muhammad's horse, stands in the middle of the tank. The water stored in the tank was once considered sacred. Today, Hauz-i-Shamsi is a popular destination for history enthusiasts and tourists alike. It is located close to other historical structures such as Jahaz Mahal, which was constructed on the eastern edge of the reservoir during the Lodi dynasty in the 16th century. The revitalization efforts have transformed the water body into a haven for native and migratory birds.
