India International Centre: A Cultural Oasis

The India International Centre (IIC) is a distinguished non-official organization in New Delhi, established in 1962 as a space for cultural and intellectual engagement. Envisioned as a meeting point between East and West, the IIC fosters dialogue and understanding among diverse communities. The center's foundation stone was laid in 1960 by Japanese Prince Akihito, and it was inaugurated in 1962 by Dr. S. Radhakrishnan, then the President of India. The IIC was designed by American architect Joseph Allen Stein, who also designed other major institutions in the area, leading to the nickname 'Steinabad'. The architecture blends modernism with local materials, featuring open spaces and rectilinear forms. An annex was added in 1996, and the Kamaladevi Complex in 2011, to accommodate the center's expanding activities. The IIC hosts a wide array of events, including lectures, seminars, cultural programs, and exhibitions. It provides a platform for statesmen, diplomats, intellectuals, scientists, artists, and members of civil society to engage in discussions on various topics. The center is known for its beautiful gardens, which provide a serene environment for visitors. The IIC also offers amenities such as a library, dining hall, lounge, and bar, creating a welcoming space for members and guests. Membership includes artists, academicians, government officials, judges, journalists, and social activists. The IIC remains unaligned, maintaining a non-official character and commitment to fostering international cooperation.
