Okhla Bird Sanctuary (OBS), also known as Shaheed Chandra Shekhar Azad Sanctuary, is a protected area at the Okhla Barrage over the Yamuna River, located on the Delhi-Uttar Pradesh border in Noida. Officially established in 1990, the sanctuary spans approximately 4 square kilometers and has become a celebrated destination for ornithologists and nature enthusiasts alike. The sanctuary's history is rooted in the construction of the Agra Canal in 1874, which first attracted birdwatchers to the area. The creation of the Okhla Barrage in 1984 further shaped the landscape, leading to the formal designation of the area as a bird sanctuary. OBS is now recognized as one of India's Important Bird Areas (IBAs), providing critical habitat for migratory and resident birds. The diverse habitat within the sanctuary, including wetlands, grasslands, and trees, supports a wide array of bird species. Visitors can spot various species of birds such as Kingfishers, Cormorants and Warblers. During the winter months (October to March), the sanctuary becomes a haven for migratory birds, with species such as the Shoveller Duck, Northern Pintail and Common Teal. The Yamuna River, which flows through the sanctuary, not only provides a source of water for the birds but also enhances the natural beauty of the area. OBS offers visitors a serene escape from the urban bustle, with opportunities for birdwatching, nature walks, and photography. The sanctuary features a motorable road that extends for over a kilometer, eventually turning into a walking trail, as well as strategically placed watch towers for enhanced bird spotting and panoramic views.
