4.4

Safdarjung Tomb, also known as 'Safdarjung ka Maqbara,' is a sandstone and marble mausoleum located in Delhi, India. Constructed in 1754 in the late Mughal Empire style, it was built for Nawab Safdarjung, who served as the Prime Minister (Wazir ul-Hindustan) during the reign of Ahmad Shah Bahadur. His son, Nawab Shujaud Daula, commissioned the tomb as a tribute to his father. The tomb is designed as an enclosed garden tomb, similar in style to Humayun's Tomb and the Taj Mahal. The layout features the Char Bagh plan, with the mausoleum at its center. The complex includes several pavilions, such as Jangli Mahal (Palace in the Woods), Moti Mahal (Pearl Palace), and Badshah Pasand (King's Favourite). The main mausoleum, constructed with red and buff sandstone, has a central dome and intricate marble inlay work. The interior is adorned with rococo plaster and decorations. While inspired by Humayun's Tomb, Safdarjung Tomb is noted for its distinct character and the materials used in its construction. The tomb represents the last monumental garden tomb of the Mughals, marking the end of an era in Mughal architecture. Today, the Archaeological Survey of India manages the site, maintaining a library over the main gate.
