Discover more about Sultanpur National Park

Sultanpur National Park, formerly known as Sultanpur Bird Sanctuary, is a 1.43 square kilometer haven for birdwatchers and nature enthusiasts, located in the Gurugram district of Haryana, approximately 15 km from Gurugram and 50 km from Delhi. The park's history dates back to 1971 when it was declared a bird sanctuary, later being upgraded to a national park in 1989. In 2021, it was recognized as a Ramsar site due to its ecological importance. The park is centered around a 'jheel' (lake), providing a crucial wetland ecosystem for a diverse range of avian species. Over 250 species of birds have been recorded here, including both resident and migratory birds. The best time to visit is during the winter months (October to March) when migratory birds from Europe, Siberia, and Central Asia arrive to escape the harsh winters. These species use the park as a resting and feeding ground before continuing their journey. Some frequently seen migratory birds include the Siberian crane, greater flamingo, ruff, black-winged stilt, and various species of teal, wagtail, and shoveler. Sultanpur National Park also supports a variety of resident bird species throughout the year. Some of the resident birds include the common hoopoe, paddyfield pipit, purple sunbird, and several types of cormorants, francolins, and kingfishers. Aside from birds, the park is also home to mammals such as nilgai, wild boar, and jackals. To facilitate birdwatching, the park features four watchtowers (machans) that offer panoramic views of the lake and surrounding area. There is also an Educational Interpretation Center to guide visitors, providing information on the park's flora and fauna. The park also has basic amenities such as parking, restrooms and drinking water.
