Bagh-I-Alam Ka Gumbad: A Lodhi-Era Relic in Delhi's Deer Park

Bagh-I-Alam Ka Gumbad, meaning "Dome of the Garden of the World," is a historical monument located in Deer Park, Hauz Khas, in South Delhi. This domed tomb dates back to the Lodi period of the 15th century, exemplifying the architectural and cultural achievements of the Lodi dynasty that ruled Delhi before the Mughal Empire. The tomb is believed to have been constructed around 1501. The structure features typical Lodi architecture with its octagonal design, robust stone masonry, and a central dome sitting atop a raised platform. The walls are adorned with intricate decorative patterns, reflecting the Persian-influenced style prevalent during that period. While simpler in design compared to later Mughal tombs, it possesses elegant proportions and an austere beauty characteristic of Lodi-era aesthetics. The interior has an octagonal design, with a dome made of sixteen blind niches, crowned by a lotus finial. It is believed that the tomb houses the remains of Shihab-ud-din Taj Khan, a Muslim saint who lived during the reign of Sikander Lodhi. The structure is made of local stone, with touches of ceramic and red sandstone. The tomb is adjoined by a wall mosque, which is built in the direction of Mecca. On the corners of this wall are two octagonal domed towers and five mihrabs (niches) for prayer. Surrounded by gardens, originally part of a larger complex, Bagh-e-Alam ka Gumbad embodies the "garden-tomb" concept. Today, it stands as a protected monument, offering visitors a glimpse into Delhi's pre-Mughal era and the Lodi dynasty's contribution to Indo-Islamic architecture.
