    Nathu La is accessible only by road from Gangtok. The journey is approximately 54 kilometers (34 miles) and takes about 2-3 hours. Shared taxis and reserved vehicles are available in Gangtok. It is advisable to hire a four-wheel-drive vehicle due to the steep and winding terrain. Only vehicles authorized by the Sikkim government are permitted on this route. The cost for a shared taxi ranges from ₹3,000 to ₹5,000, depending on the season. Hiring a private SUV, such as a Scorpio or Innova, costs around ₹8,000, including the permit fee. Permits are checked at the police check post.
