It connects Sikkim with China's Tibet Autonomous Region and is located 54 kilometers (34 mi) east of Gangtok, the capital of Sikkim. Historically, Nathu La was a vital link on the Old Silk Route, facilitating trade between India and Tibet. The pass was closed in 1962 following the Sino-Indian War but reopened in 2006, resuming its role in trade and serving as a Border Personnel Meeting (BPM) point. The Indian Army maintains a strong presence, and a war memorial commemorates the soldiers who fought in the 1967 clashes. Nearby attractions include the Baba Harbhajan Singh Mandir and Tsomgo Lake, enhancing the overall experience. Nathu La's reopening has not only boosted the regional economy through trade but also facilitated pilgrimages to Mount Kailash and Lake Manasarovar, strengthening cultural and economic ties between India and China.
