Lower Aguada Fort: A Coastal Sentinel

Lower Aguada Fort, constructed between 1609 and 1612, is a testament to Portuguese military architecture and engineering in Goa. The fort derives its name from the Portuguese word 'água,' meaning water, due to the freshwater springs within that supplied water to ships. Strategically located, it was built to defend against Dutch and Maratha invasions, protecting Portuguese interests and controlling entry into the Mandovi River. The fort is divided into upper and lower sections. The lower fort provided safe harbor for Portuguese ships, while the upper section served as a watering station and included a lighthouse. The lighthouse, erected in 1864, is one of the oldest of its kind in Asia and guided ships sailing from Europe. Although the original lighthouse is no longer in use, a newer one stands nearby. Today, Lower Aguada Fort is a popular tourist attraction, offering stunning views of the Arabian Sea and surrounding landscapes. Visitors can explore the well-maintained pathways, remnants of robust walls, and the old cannons. The fort provides insights into Goa's colonial past and maritime history.
