Getting There

  • Road

    From Srinagar Airport (SXR), hire a prepaid taxi to Gulmarg. The journey is approximately 50 km and takes about 2-3 hours. Taxi fares range from ₹1500 to ₹2500. Alternatively, take a shared taxi or bus to Tangmarg, then another to Gulmarg. Bus fare from Tangmarg to Gulmarg is around ₹40. During winter, buses may only operate up to Tangmarg, requiring a jeep with chains for the remaining distance.

    Within Gulmarg, most attractions are within walking distance. From the Gulmarg taxi stand or parking area, the Gondola base station is about a 500-700 meter walk. Pony rides are available, but walking is easily manageable. Local taxis and sledges are also available for getting around, with prices dependent on demand and negotiation.

Gulmarg, also known as Gulmarag in Kashmiri, is a town, hill station, and popular tourist destination located in the Baramulla district of Jammu and Kashmir, India. Situated at an altitude of 2,650 meters (8,694 feet), it is approximately 49 kilometers (30 miles) from Srinagar. Historically known as Gaurimarg, meaning 'the path of Goddess Gauri', Gulmarg was renamed in the 16th century by Sultan Yusuf Shah Chak, who was captivated by its beauty. The Mughal emperor Jahangir also frequented Gulmarg, collecting 21 varieties of wildflowers for his gardens. The British developed Gulmarg as a summer retreat in the 19th century, establishing a golf course and ski club.
