Doodhpathri: The Valley of Milk

Doodhpathri, often called the 'Valley of Milk,' is a picturesque and relatively unexplored hill station in the Budgam district of Jammu and Kashmir. At an altitude of 8,957 feet (2,730 meters) above sea level, it lies in a bowl-shaped valley within the Pir Panjal Range of the Himalayas. The name 'Doodhpathri' originates from the milky appearance of the water flowing through the meadows. Legend says that the revered Sufi saint of Kashmir, Sheikh Noor-ud-Din Noorani, once struck the ground with his stick in search of water for prayers, and milk emerged instead. He then stated that the milk could only be used for drinking and not for ablution, upon which the milk transformed into water. Even today, the water retains a unique milky appearance from a distance. Doodhpathri is characterized by its vast, verdant meadows surrounded by snow-capped mountains and dense forests of pine, fir, and deodar. During spring and summer, wildflowers like daisies, forget-me-nots, and buttercups bloom across the landscape, adding vibrant colors to the serene environment. The Shaliganga River, the lifeline of Doodhpathri, meanders through the valley, its frothy waters creating a soothing ambiance. Key attractions in and around Doodhpathri include the Shaliganga River, Tangnar (known for its panoramic views), Palmaidan (a vast meadow popular with trekkers), Diskhal (a meadow offering views of the Ashtar Glacier), and nearby destinations like Yusmarg and Tosamaidan. Activities such as trekking, pony rides, camping, and photography are popular among visitors. While Doodhpathri is accessible by road, it is essential to note that the region experiences heavy snowfall in winter, making it inaccessible for several months. The best time to visit is during the summer months when the weather is pleasant, and the meadows are in full bloom.
