Pobitora Wildlife Sanctuary, located in the Morigaon district of Assam, is a crucial refuge for the Indian one-horned rhinoceros. Established in 1987, the sanctuary spans 38.85 square kilometers of grassland and wetland habitat along the Brahmaputra River. Pobitora is known for having the highest density of one-horned rhinos in the world. The sanctuary's history began as a grazing reserve before being recognized for its rhino population in the 1960s. In 1971, it was declared a reserve forest, and later a wildlife sanctuary to protect the endangered rhinoceros. Today, Pobitora stands as a testament to successful conservation efforts, with the rhino population increasing over the years. As of 2022, the rhino count stood at 107, comprised of 30 males, 50 females, and 27 calves. Pobitora offers jeep and elephant safaris for wildlife viewing. The landscape consists of grasslands, wetlands, and small hills, providing an ideal environment for diverse species. Besides rhinos, the sanctuary is home to Asiatic buffalo, leopards, wild boars, and various bird species. Pobitora is a birdwatcher's paradise, hosting both migratory and resident birds.
