Getting There

Public Transport

From Gwalior Railway Station, take a local bus, auto-rickshaw, or taxi to Gwalior Fort. Buses are available from 6:00 AM to 10:00 PM and cost approximately INR 10 depending on the distance. Auto-rickshaws are widely available and cost INR 10-20 for short distances, but fares are negotiable. A taxi ride will cost more, but is more direct.
Walking

From the base of the hill, there are two main approaches to the fort: the eastern entrance (Qila Gate) and the western entrance (Urvai Gate). The eastern entrance involves a steep trek, while the western entrance allows vehicles. If walking, start from the eastern entrance and follow the path uphill, enjoying the views and rock sculptures along the way.
Taxi/Ride-share

Taxis and ride-sharing services like Ola and Uber are readily available in Gwalior. A taxi ride from the city center or railway station to the Urvai Gate (western entrance) of Gwalior Fort will cost approximately INR 150-250, depending on the distance and time of day. From the Urvai Gate, you can hire a local taxi operated by the fort authority for INR 50 per person to reach the ticket counter.

Legend says that Suraj Sen, a local king, founded the fort in 600 CE after being cured of leprosy by a sage named Gwalipa.
