Known as the 'Gibraltar of India' for its strategic position and imposing architecture, the fort has been controlled by various dynasties, including the Tomars, Mughals, Marathas, and Scindias. Mughal Emperor Babur described it as the 'pearl amongst the fortresses of Hind'. The fort's origins are linked to a local legend about King Suraj Sen, who was cured of leprosy by a sage named Gwalipa. In gratitude, the king built the fort and named it after the sage. The fort complex houses several historical monuments, palaces, and temples, reflecting a blend of Rajput, Mughal, and Jain architectural styles. Key attractions include the Man Mandir Palace, known for its intricate carvings and colorful tiled walls; the Gujari Mahal, now an archaeological museum; the Teli ka Mandir, a unique temple showcasing a blend of North and South Indian architecture; and the twin Saas Bahu Temples dedicated to Lord Vishnu. Visitors can explore the fort's rich history through its various structures and museums. The Archaeological Survey of India Museum within the fort complex displays a collection of artifacts and sculptures. The fort also offers panoramic views of the city of Gwalior. A light and sound show is held every evening at Man Mandir Palace, narrating the fort's history.
