Scindia Chhatri: A Royal Memorial

The Scindia Chhatri is a prominent attraction in Gwalior, serving as a poignant reminder of the Scindia dynasty's legacy. Situated in Chhatri Bazar, the complex features a collection of chhatris (dome-shaped pavilions) that commemorate notable rulers from the Scindia family. The first chhatri was erected in 1817 CE to honor Jayaji Rao Scindia, and subsequent additions have enriched the site's architectural and historical significance. The older chhatris, constructed from yellow and pink sandstone, exhibit remarkable architectural value. Prominent among them are the chhatris dedicated to Jiwaji Rao Scindia, Daulat Rao Scindia, and Janko ji Rao Scindia. These structures showcase intricate stone carvings depicting elephants, horses, and tigers, preserving the beauty of the medieval period. The monuments are built using pink and white stones, and a large, picturesque tank is located between the chhatris of Madhav Rao Scindia and Maharani Shakya Raje Scindia. The Scindia Chhatris stand as a testament to the region's rich heritage, blending Mughal and Hindu architectural styles.
