Discover more about Soole Bazaar

Soole Bazaar, historically known as Courtesan Street or Soolai Bazaar, offers a fascinating glimpse into Hampi's past. Located at the foot of Matanga Hill and in front of the Achyuta Raya Temple, this deserted temple street was once a lively marketplace during the Vijayanagara Empire. The name 'Soole Bazaar' translates to 'prostitute's market,' reflecting its past as a place occupied by dancing girls who enticed men. Stretching half a kilometer in length and 50 meters wide, the street is lined with exquisitely carved pillars, remnants of pavilions that once stood on either side. Although the pavilions are now ruined, the street retains its beauty and splendor, attracting tourists who imagine the bustling activity of bygone days. A large, stepped rectangular tank, believed to be part of the Achyuta Raya Temple, is located at the northwest end of the street, featuring a small, damaged pillared pavilion at its center. This pavilion served as a base for deity images during the temple's annual boat festival. Today, Soole Bazaar is a popular tourist attraction, offering a blend of historical intrigue and cultural significance. Visitors can explore the ruins, admire the intricate carvings, and soak in the atmosphere of this ancient commercial center. The bazaar is also conveniently located near other historical sites, making it an excellent starting point for exploring Hampi's rich heritage.
