Discover more about Sultanpur National Park

Sultanpur National Park, formerly known as Sultanpur Bird Sanctuary, is a haven for birdwatchers and nature enthusiasts, located in the Gurugram district of Haryana. Situated approximately 50 km from Delhi and 15 km from Gurugram, this park offers a peaceful escape from urban life. Originally a shallow freshwater wetland, the area attracted diverse bird species. Recognizing its ecological importance, the area was declared a bird sanctuary in 1972 and upgraded to a National Park in 1991. Today, the 1.43 square kilometer park is artificially revived with water pumped from the Yamuna River. Sultanpur National Park is home to over 250 bird species, including both resident and migratory birds. The park is best visited during the winter months (December to February) when migratory birds arrive from Siberia, Europe, and Central Asia. These long-distance travelers seek refuge from harsh northern winters, using the park as a resting place from September to March-April. Birdwatchers can spot species such as the Siberian crane, greater flamingo, ruff, black-winged stilt, common teal, and northern pintail. Resident birds include the common hoopoe, purple sunbird, and white-throated kingfisher. The park also supports other wildlife, including the nilgai, Indian fox and black buck. The park features a 4-km-long circular walking trail around a lake, with four watchtowers (machans) offering panoramic views. An Interpretation Centre provides information about the park's flora and fauna. The park also has basic amenities such as parking, toilets and drinking water.
