Discover more about Himalayan Tibet Museum

The Himalayan Tibet Museum, inaugurated on July 2, 2015, stands as a vibrant testament to Tibetan culture and history in the heart of Darjeeling. Founded by the Manjushree Centre of Tibetan Culture, a non-profit dedicated to preserving Tibetan heritage, the museum distinguishes itself by focusing on the history and culture of Tibetans, rather than primarily on religious aspects. The museum's origins are rooted in a response to the misrepresentation of Tibetan history. Ngawang Tenzin Gyatso, the president of the Manjushree Centre, conceived the idea after visiting the National Museum in Lhasa and observing what he believed to be a manipulation of Tibetan history. This inspired him to create a museum in Darjeeling that would present an accurate portrayal of Tibetan history and culture. The museum boasts a diverse collection of priceless exhibits and artifacts. Visitors can explore displays showcasing traditional clothing, religious sculptures, historical photographs, and intricate thangka paintings. One of the most striking displays is a large 3-dimensional structure depicting the Himalayas and the Tibetan Plateau. The museum also features items donated by the Dalai Lama, including a Buddha statue and a Diamond Sutra text written in gold ink. The museum serves as a hub for cultural knowledge, providing insights into Tibetan history, religion, and way of life. Located on Gandhi Road, the museum is easily accessible from the town center. It is situated on the ground floor of the Manjushree Centre, which also houses a budget hotel called Tibet Home.
