Banasur Fort: A Mythical Hilltop Stronghold

Banasur Fort, also known as Banasur ka Kila, is a historical fort located in the Champawat district of Uttarakhand, India. Perched at an elevation of approximately 1,859 meters (6,099 feet) above sea level in the Kumaon region, the fort is named after the demon king Banasur from Hindu mythology, who was believed to be a devotee of Lord Shiva and the son of King Bali. According to legend, Banasur ruled over the region and had a daughter named Usha. Usha fell in love with Aniruddha, the grandson of Lord Krishna, which led to a fierce battle between Banasur and Krishna. It is said that Banasur was ultimately defeated by Krishna at the very site where the fort stands today. While the exact origins of the fort are debated, it is believed to have been constructed during the medieval period, with influences from the local kings of Kumaon and Garhwal. Though now in ruins, remnants of ancient walls and battlements are still visible, offering insights into the military architecture and strategies of the time. The fort has witnessed several invasions and periods of conflict, reflecting its strategic significance in the region. Today, Banasur Fort attracts tourists interested in history, mythology, and trekking. The trek to the fort passes through verdant valleys and forested trails, offering scenic landscapes and a refreshing experience for adventure enthusiasts.
