Established in 2002 by the Nepal Mountaineering Association (NMA), the museum's mission is to preserve and showcase the history, culture, and ecology of mountains, with a special focus on the Himalayas.The IMM features three main exhibition halls: the Hall of Great Himalayas, the Hall of Fame, and the Hall of World Mountains.
