Getting There

• Car

  From Leh, head southeast on the NH 1D highway towards Chang La pass. The drive will take about 5 hours, covering a distance of approximately 160 kilometers. Along the way, you will pass through picturesque landscapes and quaint villages. Make sure you stop at Chang La, which is one of the highest motorable roads in the world, for breathtaking views. After crossing Chang La, continue on the road until you reach the fork, then take the left towards Panggong Lake. Follow the signs for Panggong Tso, and after about 30 kilometers, you will arrive at the lake. Note that you may need to pay a permit fee for entering this region, which typically costs around INR 20-50 (USD 0.25-0.60).

• Public Transportation

  From Leh, you can take a shared taxi or a bus heading to Panggong Lake. Shared taxis can be found at the main taxi stand in Leh, and the fare is usually around INR 400-600 (USD 5-7) per person. The journey will take approximately 6-7 hours. If you opt for a bus, you may need to check the local schedules as they can vary, and the fare is generally around INR 300-500 (USD 4-6). The bus will follow a similar route as the taxis, passing through Chang La. Ensure you have your Inner Line Permit ready, as it will be checked at the checkpoints along the way.

• Private Taxi Service

  For more comfort, consider hiring a private taxi from Leh. Many travel agencies offer this service, and it will cost between INR 2,500-4,000 (USD 30-50) for a round trip. The taxi will take you directly to Panggong Lake, allowing you to enjoy the scenic beauty at your own pace. Make sure to negotiate the fare in advance and confirm the duration of the trip, as it can take around 5-6 hours one way depending on road conditions.
