History of Rishikesh

Rishikesh is believed to be a part of the legendary 'Kedarkhand' in ancient texts. It has been a significant hub for sages and ascetics since the time of the Vedas. The name 'Rishikesh' is derived from 'Hrishikesha,' a moniker for Lord Vishnu who appeared to Raibhya Rishi as a reward for his penance.
According to Hindu mythology, Lord Rama performed penance here for killing Ravana. His younger brother, Lakshmana, crossed the Ganges on a jute rope bridge where the present 'Lakshman Jhula' stands. This ancient bridge was replaced by an iron suspension bridge in 1939.
In the early 20th century, several ashrams were established, turning Rishikesh into an epicenter for yoga and spiritual learning. Notable among these is the Swarg Ashram, one of the oldest in Rishikesh, founded by Swami Vishudhanand.
In February 1968, the Beatles visited the ashram of Maharishi Mahesh Yogi to study Transcendental Meditation. Their stay in Rishikesh became a significant cultural event, drawing global attention and leading to the creation of several songs that appeared on the 'White Album.'
