Shalban Bihar, located in Mainamati, Comilla, Bangladesh, is an ancient archaeological site that dates back to the 8th century. This well-preserved complex provides a captivating glimpse into the religious and architectural achievements of ancient Bengal. The name 'Shalban' comes from the once-dense forests of Sal trees that surrounded the area.Founded in the 8th century by Bhava Deva, the fourth ruler of the Early-Deva dynasty, Shalban Bihar served as a prominent center for Buddhist learning and practice until the 12th century. The monastery's design follows the Paharpur-style Buddhist Bihar architecture, featuring a large square courtyard surrounded by 115 monastic cells. Each cell provided living space for the monks, with niches for oil lamps, books, and idols.Archaeological excavations have revealed a wealth of artifacts, offering insights into the daily lives, religious practices, and artistic skills of the monks. These findings include terracotta plaques, copperplate inscriptions, coins, seals, and various religious objects, many of which are now housed in the Mainamati Museum. The central shrine, believed to have been constructed and reconstructed several times, exhibits a blend of Buddhist and Hindu architectural traditions.Today, Shalban Bihar stands as a protected archaeological site, attracting visitors who come to explore its ancient ruins and learn about its history.
